Basic electronics lab experiment for finding resistor color code
OBJECTIVE :
The objective of this exercise is to become familiar with the measurement of the resistance values using a digital multimeter (DMM) . a second objective is to learn color code .
APPARATUS:
Required apparatus for this experiment
-Resistor
-Digital multimeter.
Theory overview :
The resistor is the most fundamental of all electrical devices, which resist to flow of electric current. The more it offers resistance in a circuit , the greater will be the opposition in current flow .Then , digital multimeter is a device that measures resistance in unpowered circuit . Resistor colour code typically consist of bands mostly four .The first and second band indicates the precision value while the third indicate power applied and fourth indicates tolerance .
PROCEDURE :
Following are steps included in procedure
- First of all , calculate the value of a given resistor by using technique of resistor color code .
- next , note down the values of first two color bands .
- Then observe third band ,observe power by ten .
- Indicate value of tolerance by uisng fourth band .
- After that calculate resistance of given resistor .
- Finally now calculate resistance by attaching resistor by multimeter and match values appeared on multimeter .
DIAGRAM :
CALCULATIONS ;
DIGIT | DIGIT | MULTIPLIER | TOLERANCE |
Brown | Black | Red | Gold |
1 | 0 | X 100 | +,- 5 % |
=10 X 100 (+,- 5% )
=1000 (+,- 5 % )
= 1000X5/100
=50
=1000(+,-) 50
=950- 1050 ohms ( value calculated by resistor )
value calculated my multimeter = 0.978 ohm
=0.978X1000 ohm
= 978ohm
DIGIT | DIGIT | MULTIPLIER | TOLERANCE |
Red | Red | orange | Gold |
2 | 2 | X 103 | +,- 5 % |
=22 X 103 (+,-) 5%
= 22000 X5/1000
= 1100 ohm ( value calculated by resistor )
by multimeter 211k kilo ohm
DIGIT | DIGIT | MULTIPLIER | TOLERANCE |
Brown | Black | Brown | Gold |
1 | 0 | X 1 | +,- 5 % |
= 10 X 10 1 (+,-) 5 %
=105- 95 ohm by resistor
while by multimeter 99 kilo ohm
RESULT :
The resistance value appeared on DMM matches the value calculated by resistor color code technique .
